I'm coming to Harrah's on a freebie and so far am not planning to rent a car. Is it cool to walk downtown at night? Weird? Dangerous? |

It's cool to walk the Virginia Street from the river south to Circus Circus. It's also cool to walk west down Third or Fourth to the Sands Regency, and down First or Second to Arlington or so, where there are lots of nightspots. If safety's a concern, I wouldn't wander far outside those boundaries, Reno harbors a disproportionate number of vagrants and lowlifes, sad to say. |

There's a bunch of skateboarding kids hangin out on Virginia Street at night. But the cops are everywhere...and kids are a mere annoyance.
You have a much greater chance of getting your bankroll taken INSIDE the casinos than OUTSIDE. But you're likely to get a few expensive "free" drinks out of the deal. My personal record is three, $ 200 Bloody Marys in under an hour... oh....except for that ONE $ 800 beer I drank at the craps table at the old Comstock. At least I got a "free" $ 30 room out of THAT !
It's the BEST thing about Reno. Nearly EVERYTHING is walking distance. |

Hey Deadeye, thanks for waking up the board. It was asleep for almost a week.
During the day I walk all over the place and lots of the areas around downtown are pretty cool. Nice scenery along the river and by Saint Mary's Church on W.6th St. If you're into a bit of a hike the University is 10 minutes or so north of Circus Circus. It's a beautiful campus.
At night there's just too many closed places along Virginia St. for the walk along it to be considered cool anymore, (in my opinion anyway) ... so maybe weird is a good word for it. Certainly for those who remember it as it was 20 years ago it can rightly be called depressing.
A friend of mine was accosted as he exited Shooter's (a dive bar across from the Silver Legacy). But that just adds to the charm of the place! He was gooned and they roughed him up a bit, but fortunately his black belt in Karate "kicked" in and they (he thinks there was two of them) got, by far, the worst of it. The next day his slot host at the S.L. saw him and noticing the bruises asked what happened. After he sheepishly explained the slot host said "That's a bad place - Stay away from there!" But that only adds to the charm of the place!
Personally, I've never had any trouble walking around downtown at night but I have always been cautious. I used to stay at the Sands a lot and I had a couple of routes that took me either through the Silver Legacy and the Sundowner or up 2nd Street past the RiverBoat, Comstock, and then past the Colonial. Can't exactly do that anymore. But W. 4th is really well illuminated now so it's a good route.
Anyway, have a good time and good luck! |

I guess I'm basically asking about walking from Siena to Harrahs/Eldorado area. I'm not worried about the daytime. It does look a little moribund, and many vagrants, etc. I'm from New Jersey, so I'm not afraid of weirdos. But I was also carjacked once at gunpoint, and I am afraid of that kind of stuff. Thanks for your comments. |

Fuggettaboutit.
There are cops on bikes everywhere (that you don't see).
But funny, when there's some minor incident, poof!! You'll wonder where they all came from.
The kids playing guitar might be spanging for change...but don't give em any cause they'll just get another hole in the head.
The route you're talking about can be up close near buildings OR in the wide open near the skating rink. I do that Siena/Harrah's route all the time.
Real late at night, I might pick my route to the Sands carefully, but still wouldn't worry too much. But as in any city, when someone asks for a cigarette or a match, ...."Sorry, I don't smoke" !!! |

Boy, it sure is a sore spot for our board and any other discussion of Reno.
Short answer: Walking around is a tad on the weird side at night, but not so much that it's a major concern. When you've lived in Jersey, as the questioner has, or the Bronx, as I have, you take a certain amount of street madness in stride.
People who have no exposure at all to 'the big city' often find their enjoyment levels dropping at the site of bums, beggars, vagrants, maladroits, homeless, and street people, and it's hard to know what advice to impart, other than to say, "You may find these sights/sounds/smells disagreeable, but they are generally not harmful."
But again, if your hometown has bums, you've already seen 'em, so there will be no big surprises.
Help us revive street life in Reno by walking around! The city sure needs it. |

Thanks, guys. I think I'll be walking my serious city night walk all around your town, and strolling in the daytime. |

There ya go...perfect balance!
If things start getting weird, just start asking strangers for change - that'll take the heat off. |

Scary as all get out in my opinion. Streets are empty at night. |

Given that;
Stan's suggestion may be a valid one or you could simply confine your late night ventures to casinos within sprinting distance. |
