Sunday, Nov 5, 2006 (Day 1)
Janice and I crossed the border at Blaine Washington at 8:30 A.M. en-route to Sea-Tac Airport. We were on our way to Reno via a Southwest Airlines flight at 1:40 P.M. to celebrate Janice’s birthday which was the next day. I advised the border guard of our intentions and he wished Janice a Happy Birthday. Nice guy. We were on our way.
We had a decent day and the drive to Seattle was pleasant. The flight was on time and smooth. Janice had a nice little girl from Verdi sitting next to her who was very talkative and cheerful. We walked out of the Airport and onto the Eldorado’s shuttle and in no time we were standing in the lobby. Check in was quick. The room was spacious and clean.
It was our plan to have dinner the next day (Janice’s Birthday) at La Strada, the Italian restaurant at the Eldorado. (We had dined there once before and thoroughly enjoyed it.) We decided to check with them to see if we would need a reservation. Bad news! They were closing the next day for renovations. So we had dinner there that night (after we played a bit of Keno (Janice won $15)). La Strada did not disappoint. Although we had the early bird special, it was very good and we were treated very well by the staff.
That evening we did a little gambling at the Eldorado and the Silver Legacy and I had some luck playing “Pharaoh’s Fortune” and “Multi Strike” video poker. Janice had a little luck too but the machines grabbed it all back.
Monday, Nov. 6th (Day 2)
We started our day with a free (and very good) breakfast buffet at the Eldorado. This “comp” was included in our Southwest vacations package. We then spent our day wandering around downtown Reno, gambling a little, looking in gift shops and taking pictures. The weather was really nice – more like a September day than a November one. We had coffee in the afternoon at the CalNeva’s coffee nook in the skywalk casino portion. We strolled north up Virginia Street past Shooters all the way to Walgreen’s. We returned to our room around five and got ready for dinner. Janice wanted to go to the Sweetwater café for her Birthday dinner and have Chinese food. So we did. We were slightly disappointed in the food as it seemed that it was not freshly prepared. It wasn’t bad, but not as good as we remembered it being a few years ago.
After dinner we caught the Eldo’s shuttle back to the Airport to pick up a rental car I had reserved online. Got a good deal through Hotwire. Although I had reserved a compact we ended up with a brand new Chevy Malibu (candy-apple red no less) for the same price. We drove to the Ross store south of the Atlantis where Janice got some good deals on shoes and some Christmas gifts. I thought about stopping at the Peppermill on the way back but the birthday girl wanted to go home (to the Eldorado) so that’s where we went. We had a snack at the coffee and cake bar outside Tivoli gardens. Pretty good carrot cake! We gambled some that evening but Lady Luck paid us no heed.
Tuesday Nov. 7th (Day 3)
Wow, it was check out day already! Did the room service thing…I went downstairs and brought up danishes and coffee. We finished packing, checked out and went to the car. We had lots of time left in Reno as our flight was due out at 7:40 P.M. We drove to Virginia City and walked through most of it. Janice shopped till I dropped. Had a beer and hotdog and gambled a few bucks away.
Then we were off again, this time to John’s place to visit with him and his wonderful Cockatoos, Charlie and Higgins. Janice is an animal lover, to say the least, and Charlie and Higgins seemed to sense that and were glad to return the affection. Higgins wanted a souvenir of our visit and gracefully stole Janice’s bracelet. Janice was only too glad to let him keep it too.
After saying a long goodbye to the birds, John, Janice and I drove to the Peppermill. As we waited for John to get a comp for the Fireside lounge, Janice felt a tug at her arm and heard a “Hi Janice”. She turned to face someone she didn’t think she recognized. But I knew who it was. It was Jerry and his Bride, Becky.
After introductions we all spent some time together at the Fireside Lounge. We had some good laughs and a couple of drinks but it was all too brief as Janice and I had to leave for the airport. Jerry it was great to see you again. Becky it was so nice to meet you. And John, thanks very much for having us into your home, entertaining us with Charlie and Higgins and for the drinks at the Peppermill.
We returned our car to the airport, checked in, had a snack and flew away on time at 7:40. There were a few bumps as we rose through some turbulence but most of the flight was smooth. We arrived in Seattle ahead of schedule and were soon driving north to our home south of Vancouver B.C.
This was a great trip for both of us. We’ll be back soon.

Thanks for the trip report, Dave, and the kind words about the Cockatoos. As I threatened, here's evidence of your affiliation with the boys:
Higgins thanks you again for the bracelet and is still disassembling it as I write this.
Hope to see you back again soon. |

Thanks Alison, Barb and especially John. Wow, with our picture posted we feel like Reno celebrities! I love writing those trip reports since they require a trip to Reno to precede them. |

Congratulations on a really great trip.
I read what you said about not being completely satisfied with the Chinese food at Sweetwater's. Next time you go down, just for the heckofit, try the Golden Fortune at the Eldorado for Chinese food. They specialize in Hong Kong cuisine. I've eaten there twice and both times thought I'd died and gone to Chinese heaven. |

Thanks for the tip Bob. I thought about trying the Golden Fortune once before but didn't make it. Now that I have a glowing report on it, we will have to give it a try. Were there any specific dishes that you remember as outstanding?

great to read the report, Dave. And to see the pic, John.
Wow, we enjoyed the all-too-brief time with you guys. The pleasure of your company, Dave, is only exceeded by that of your young and lovely bride. Aren't we follically-challenged men lucky? |
