You could also rent a car in sfo and drive. There might still be a chance of some snow over the pass, but if the weather cooperates it's not a bad drive at all.

If you come by train the station is right across the street from Harrah's parking ramp so you only have about a block to walk. With no car and only one day to spend your sightseeing opportunities will be limited. You should probably just stick to the downtown core along Virginia Street. That will give you 5 casinos to visit (7 if you want to wander over to the Sands or Siena) plus several bars with slots and video poker.

I have never felt threatened downtown but, as in any city, use common sense and stick to the lighted areas after dark. There are a few panhandlers but nothing compared to some parts of San Francisco. Heck, I've even encountered street people in the city park in Ashland, Oregon which, by the way, is a very nice place to visit. Back to Reno, if you're concerned you can spend your time in the Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus-Circus. These are all connected by street overpasses so you can go between them without having to go outside.

There are enough restaurants and buffets in the casinos themselves to keep you going for one day. Any one of them should be OK, depending on your preferences. Shopping downtown is mostly pawn shops and souvenir shops. There are a couple, more upscale stores along the concourses between the 3 connected casinos mentioned above but for the most part I don't think shopping will be one of your main activities. For gambling downtown I prefer the Cal Neva because I'm pretty much a low roller and Harrah's is my least favorite but, truth be told, I go to the outlying casinos more than downtown.

Hope you have a great trip. If you have any more questions let me know and I will try to answer them for you. If you post under the "Reno Comments" heading you will likely get more responses. People seem to read that section more than this one.
