The developer, Fernando Leal, has promised something unmatched in all of Nevada, but he's being very secretive on any details so it's impossible to say what's in the works. Most observers are expecting a non-gaming boutique hotel of some sort. I have heard rumors of a street level - to rooftop climbing wall on the outside of the building. I don't know if the rumors are true or, if true, how that will fit into the final theme.

There are about a dozen vehicles belonging to construction workers parked in the alley next to the building every day, and once in a while there will be a service truck (electrician, plumber etc.) outside. Something is definitely and consistently going on inside, but if that's the extent of the work crew I would hardly call it a beehive of acivity. When I got a peek inside a couple weeks ago the casino area was bare to the walls and cleaned out, but I couldn't see anything that looked like reconstruction. Whatever 'Nando's plans are, I would think it's going to be a while before you have to worry about making reservations for the grand opening.

Me, Jerry & John already did that on our way back from Shooters. Didn't think it was really a big deal....that's why I never mentioned it before.

I don't suppose they're rebuilding that stairway-overpass to the Lucky Garden?

That woud be a terrific stimulus project for Reno, and it's shovel-ready.

Take me back to the early '90's, please!

But, Dave, we did it without the handholds and such.
As I recall, though, it was 3 days before you and John told me why I had awakened that morning with all my knuckles scaped and bruised.
OTOH, we did save the 20 buck "climbing fee". BTW, I still owe you for my portion of the payment you made later to Washoe County to "spring John and me".

I guess it's official now. There's a public notice posted at the Fitz announcing a 2/11 public meeting to discuss an application for a permit for a variance to build the climbing wall. Maybe the hearing will produce some other details of exactly what is planned. Keep tuned.

Here's more on the Fitz plans, apparently soon to be called "Comm(ercial) Row." The world's tallest climbing wall at 168 feet, hosting the X games, health food restaurants but no gambling - whatever. Not in the article but I heard elsewhere that they also want to put up a ZIP line from high up on the Silver Legacy down to Fitzgerald's street level. Time will tell.

Thanks Rem for the update. But, being an old Casino lover and Reno Visitor, that project means little to me. Hope it works out as the Downtown Area needs some action. However, my guess is some very smart people are going to lose some very dumb money.

Bring back a real Gaming Joint with a real Cabaret, and I will get excited!

I posted links on the USBC Open Championships forum, and it was met with a yawn. I wonder what people want sometimes.

USBC bowlers - as a group - are upset about bowling in Reno 3 times a year since 1995, but will now be there 4 times between 2010 and 2014. The main complaint is "nothing to do except gamble in a rundown downtown filled with vagrants". Now there is a proposal to take a vacant former-casino and make it a happenin' place with "stuff to do".

And nobody seems to care.

Personally, nothing about Comm Row appeals to this out-of-shape 42-year old, however I think it is great for Reno if it can be pulled off. Between Comm Row and the whitewater park, there is adventure to be had in downtown Reno.

Mjames, your efforts at helping us re-do the brand are valiant, but we are old-time casino junkies, and have little in common with those who see Reno as a place with 'nothing to do but gamble'.

I thank you for your efforts, but the bowlers and us have rather (sharply) differing agendas.

This is a useful parable for all of us, as the something-to-do crowd doesn't care for casinos, and vice versa.

I'm far happier to see a rock-climbing thingy that I'll never, ever personally go near rather than nothing at all in the space - but it's harder to get excited about than, say, a new casino - or an OLD ONE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE!

As my mom used to say "Pine all you want for what is gone, but that won't make it come back!"

Your post, by the way, is way I so much more enjoy downtown Las Vegas over the strip. Run down as they may be, the Plaza, El Cortez, Binions, etc. hold a certain charm that I have yet to experience at the Mandalay Bay or Wynn.
