Harrah's just announced that Bill's Casino in Stateline will close January 4. Another one bites the dust..... and people used to think gaming was recession proof.

Stateline? What, out on 80 at California? That "Terrible's" that's out there, or something else?

Didn't they once have three separate casinos out there?

Ah, for the good old days....

This is Bill's as in Bill Harrah, next to Harrah's in Tahoe.

We were there last week over Thanksgiving weekendand saw only 2 employees, and NO customers, we were just passing through to get out of the cold between Mountbleu and Harrah's.

Since one in our party of 3 smoked, we did not stop. Before it was non-smoking, that place was hopping. I guess the non-smokers didn't come running. Oh, and both Mountbleu and Harrah's were busy.

Oh, STATELINE - that place I've never even been to, despite all my prognostications on Reno and the Crystal Bay-*Northern* Tahoe stateline.

Boy, these aging eyes don't connect with the brain the way they used to.

Well, a certain amount of shrinking is probably inevitable.

Anyone been on the north short of Tahoe lately? I'm wondering what's happening with that crazy "Cal-Neva" and the Biltmore....

I was on the Northshore the week of November 8-13 and spent some time in the Crystal Bay Club. It seemed to be going okay. The owners were doing lots of things (concerts, football nights, fashion shows, etc.) to pull people in and they seemed to be attracting something of a crowd. I encountered some really enjoyable dealers and table players there.

Across the street at the Biltmore, things weren't going quite as well. I walked in a couple of times, hoping to give them a little of my money. Neither time did I see anyone playing at the tables. They only had two tables open and both were continuous shuffle machines, which I don't choose to play. My two visits were on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, each time around 8:00.

I also spent a little time at the Cal-Neva. They had one table open. However, my friend and I were the only ones playing. According to the pit critter, they are only opening their tables two or three days a week now.

The Hyatt was about the same. Two or three tables open, with one to four people at a table.

Of course, this was low season. No snow on the slopes (although we did get a couple of inches on Thursday of that week) and very little else happening. Hopefully, it will improve once skiing starts.
