|

A couple of recent articles in the RGJ report that Frank Sinatra's old joint in North Lake Tahoe, the Cal Neva (not to be confused with the Club Cal Neva in downtown Reno), is planning to reopen its casino which has been closed for about a year. Opening could come as early as next week under a license issued to the folks who run Baldini's casino (not necessarily a good sign, IMHO). Although the license is unrestricted, they're opening with just slots and VP to begin with. More details:

I see they plan to open this Friday with only 40 slots and video poker machines....certainly not much, but a start. I stopped in a few months ago, and it sure was strange to see that large open area where machines and table games used to be.
The plan is to open the bar with some of those machines. That bar area is probably the most scenic vp/bar place to play anywhere. They have a huge chandelier and views of Lake Tahoe as you play. I am afraid the paytables will be just terrible. |

It's hard to imagine all the back-door shenanigans that were involved, but I'd much rather see the place open than closed. When I was there three years ago, it was such a ghost town, so any attempt to breathe new life into it is welcome. |

I stopped by yesterday afternoon to check in out. Very few machines in a small corner with "out of service" on most of them. I counted 6 machines that looked like they might work. The bar was open and had video poker machines installed.....again they all had "out of service" on the screen. |

Doesn't sound much different from before, in that case!
What's to be done? No one wants to go there; that's a hard condition to change! |
