INDIAN COOKING CLASS
Feb. 17 - March 3, 2010
Billinghurst Middle School
Details: 775-829-9010
About the event: Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is offering "Indian Cooking" class, which will be held at Billinghurst Middle School (6685 Chesterfield Lane, Reno), starting February 17.One of the most popular cuisines across the globe, Indian cuisine goes back to around 7,000 BCE when sesame and eggplant were domesticated in Indus Valley. By around 3,000 BCE, black pepper, mustard, turmeric, and cardamom were being harvested in India. Many of the staple items in cooking of India date from pre-historic times and certain preparations have virtually remained unchanged to this day. Ancient Hindu scripture Chandogya Upanishad says: "Through food comes the end of all ignorance and bondage." In ancient Sanskrit textbooks, cookery appears to have been a highly cultivated art. Even Byzantine Emperor Justinian employed an Indian chef in his palace. To be taught by daughter-mother team of Palkin Zed and Shipa Zed, this class will provide a hands-on glimpse into the cuisine of India wh ich is characterized by sophisticated and subtle use of various spices and herbs and had a remarkable influence on cuisines across the world. Over 1,200 Indian food products have reportedly been introduced in USA since 2000. Curry originated in India. All are welcome to sign-up for "Indian Cooking" class (FB124C), to be held from six to eight pm on four consecutive Wednesdays from February 17 to March 10, 2010, costing $89 with discount for seniors. 24 HOUR POETRY READING
May 28, 2010
Wooster High School Theater
Details: 775-303-7354
On May 28th and 29th, Wooster English Teacher Benjamin Arnold will pull off a 24-hour Poetry Reading inside Wooster High School's Theater to raise awareness and funds to Wooster's arts programs. In our state's current budget crisis, many things are at risk in our schools--especially arts programs. Wooster's Theater has had the same seats since 1962. Wooster Drama teacher, Kimberly Gibbons, has been trying very hard to raise the needed funds to replace the 48-year-old seats with some newer yet used seats so that patrons of the Theatre Arts Program can comfortably enjoy the many great plays and events that are held in the theater. The theater now has upgraded projection and sound to open up the space for a variety of film, dance, demonstration, poetry, music, and drama events. Wooster's Creative Writing Program and publication for the visual and literary arts, The Colt's Tale, are facing huge obstacles as they look ahead into next year's reality for Creative Writing students. They are proactively raising funds for next year's publication and printing process. Benjamin Arnold has organized this 24-hour poetry event to help raise funds for the theater chairs and The Colt's Tale publication.Benjamin Arnold is asking local businesses to consider donating some money toward the effort--but he has a special promotional to offer. If you send a donation and an XL shirt that advertises your band, business, or product, Benjamin Arnold will wear your shirt and communicate your talking points during the event, which will be streamed live on www.ustream.tv/4words. (The video will be available after the event on ustream and YouTube also.)In addition to the shirt, Benjamin Arnold is asking that you send a check for $50 or $25 (made out to Wooster High School). At the $50 level, he will wear your shirt for 2 hours during "normal" waking hours. At the $25 level, he will wear your shirt for 2 hours between midnight on 5/28 and 8:00am on 5/29. You can provide him a script of information you want him to share, and he will communicate them during hourly breaks. If you want to experience this event in person, you can join us in Wooster's Theater between 4:00-9:00pm on 5/28 and between 8:00am-4:00pm on 5/29. (The doors will be closed and locked between 10:00pm and 8:00am)You can mail your shirt, check, and information to:Wooster High Schoolattn: Benjamin Arnold1331 E. Plumb LaneReno, NV 89502. We are also seeking sponsors to purchase advertising space in next year's publication of The Colt's Tale. For more information, you can email Benjamin at: benjamin.arnold26@gmail.com

TAHOE BIG BLUE ADVENTURE RACE
September 18, 2010
Lake Tahoe
Details: 530-564-1019
Defined by both the incredible beauty of Lake Tahoe and the towering peaks of the High Sierra, Lake Tahoe is one of the world’s most famous sporting playgrounds. The region has an almost endless variety of spectacular mountain biking trails, adventurous hikes and, of course, waterborne activities on the “Big Blue” - Lake Tahoe - one of the largest, deepest and purest alpine lakes on earth. The Tahoe Big Blue Adventure Race is a celebration of the natural environment of the North Shore, and the perfect climate of “Indian Summer.” September is a favorite month of Tahoe locals... and no wonder: day-time temperatures are in the 80’s with the evenings cooling into the 60’s, the skies are deep blue with only an occasional afternoon thunderstorm rolling through (to help keep the dust down on the trails!) and, best of all, the bustle of the summer tourist season is a distant speck in the rear-view mirror. This is a perfect time for a visit to the Big Blue.
